Employees and Social Media
Yes
Employers are clearly worried about what their workers are saying on Facebook and other social networking sites.
A 2013 Javelin Research report showed that 69% of businesses are worried about data leaks on social media. Another study, this one by Velocity Digital, discovered that 25% of Facebook users don't adjust their privacy settings for their profiles, that means anyone can see their posts. Big companies like Morgan Stanley, one of the first financial companies to embrace social media, have implemented a comprehensive social media policy to manage employees' online interactions. It outlines what is acceptable for employee's to post online, the platforms they can use to connect with clients and what content they can share with their networks.
Other companies are starting to take note. “An employee could inadvertently post confidential information that could cause irreparable harm to a business,” says Kathy Swendsen, President of Travelers Global Technology.
“In addition, the speed and ease of publication to a wide audience makes it virtually impossible to remove the information once it is posted.”
